Hi everyone,
Today's post will be super short. I found a wonderful resource for high school and college students. It's totally free and sponsored by the Gates Foundation. They do good work.
It's called " Khan Academy". I have not used it yet, but I will definitely check in when I have.
Try it out!
I live over on Vashon Island, and am studying at South Seattle community College. I hope to transfer to the UW. This is about my life on the way there, and here I'll share all the tips and services that help me most!

Clubbing
Hi guys,
How are you? Getting ready for finals? What are you doing this summer- will you be taking any time off?
Want to go clubbing? It doesn't involve spray tans, and people pretending to like how jagermeister tastes- I'm talking about the clubs at South Seattle!
Plus all students can go, not just returning students over 21- they don't even check student ID at the club center!
Now a club I really wanted to be in , is PTK but my grades need work. However I am in one club- Students for Sustainability. It's President realized one day in Winter2011 Quarter we didn't have ANY clubs having to do with renewable energy or anything " green" so she started it up. Indecent-ally we could use a few members over at SFS.
Maybe that's not your thing.
You can start your own club too, you know. You should read up on it to make sure you're not making a duplicate club.
If you're not sold on the concept of going through all that to explore your interests- then you should go to a club event and see if you like it enough to join! The quarter is almost over and things like the club center shut down over summer, but if you are interested in starting a club- now would be a great time to plan it out!

TRiO
Howdy fellow students,
Today I'm going to talk about TRiO and CLiC Pretty much if you're enrolled in TRiO ( or SSS , or TRiO SSS they are all the same thing) then you will be in CLiC a lot.
To be enrolled in TRiO you must:
-Be a U.S. citizen
-Be enrolled in a 2-year degree program
-Be highly motivated to get your degree
Also you should meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Are you a first generation college student ( parents did not complete a degree or go) ?
- Are you low Income ?
- Do you have a Disability?
If you qualify you should think about applying , if you apply before the end of the quarter you should be all set for fall .
If you do get set up you can opt in for a student mentor who will be there for advice, support and to help you get the most out of TRiO-SSS!
If you've read this far, you may want to know what you'll get out of it! In addition to being much more likely than most students to graduate from the support of being enrolled (1), TRiO is federally funded and is endowed with scholarships that apply only to students enrolled in their program(2) in addition to that TRiO has tutors in CLIC - it is very relaxed in TRiO and if you'd rather have more privacy than the writing center or MAST affords then this would likely be a good fit for you .
This is the cheesy part, like in the hair club for men commercial, where I let you know I'm not blowing smoke because I'm in TRiO too! Don't hesitate to ask if you want to know anything about it!

Did that register?
Greetings fellow transfer hopefuls!
As you may know from our crimson summer catalog, Monday May 16th was the first day to register for classes online if you are a currently enrolled student.
As I imagine all of you are!
Anyhow this seemingly straight forward date may seem like the date every currently enrolled student may register online for summer (And fall! More on that later. I promise.) quarter however I'm here to let you in on the non-implicit meaning.
On tis last monday some students could have enrolled for summer. All students are given an " appointment time" for registering online that requires no actual appointment.
However you cannot register until that appointment time has come and gone. So although you may read that you can register by a certain date, it is always a good idea to go over to registration and ask them when your appointment time is.
Registering online works very similarly to checking your progress, which I made a tutorial for last week. You will notice a theme with the SID/PIN combo in signing in for any of the useful tools in Student Online Services.
There is a pecking order for who gets to pick their classes first. Who is higher up on the totem pole? Students closest to graduation. They get first choice because that enables them to complete their degree in a timely, timely manner.
One note my advisors over at TriO let me know that summer quarter is short. Only seven weeks, and other summer quarter veterans let me know that if you're planning on taking a math or a science it would be a good idea to just take that one if you have any difficulty in those fields.
If you have any requests for topics, please let me know!

The Low Down on Low Tide
So somehow I went totally nutty and did not follow the instructions for my communications class. This week's assignment was an introduction. I thought it was just a post. I don't know why I thought this!
Here goes. I'll try to answer them all. Maybe I'll get a few points.
Here goes. I'll try to answer them all. Maybe I'll get a few points.
- Your Objectives and Goals in Life, or at least the next 5 years.
- Your objectives and goals for your blog (tell your reader what you blog will be about).
- Where you readers can get a hold of you (include an email address).
Life. Well, geeze.
Five years from now I want to be in school, hopefully done with my graduate degree in Business Administration from UW and working on my PHD. I would certainly be interested in any opportunities to study abroad through UW.
Further out than five years-I want to contribute significantly to whatever sub field of business I end up in. Hopefully something like Business Psychology maybe the Psychology of International Business. I also want to contribute significantly to my family business.
I also want about 3+ kids, my own house and some kind of positive lasting improvement on South Seattle Community College before I'm 30. I'm from a family of seven ( two adults, five kids) so I'm never going to be happy with less than three kids. I'm more than okay with adopting most of my future children, but I may not be able to afford it so for now I'm planning on the old fashioned way.
I don't have anyone I'm thinking of to be the father of the future kids right now. Going stag-or mare? Filly?- right now. Completing my degree(s) is the most important thing to me right now.
Now my goals for this blog.
Well that is where the "lasting contribution to SSCC" comes in. Hopefully hints, tutorials ( thank you for the PowerPoint tip RM~!) and upcoming event info ( and information on the wonderful places I GOT the hints from!) will at least contribute a little bit.
I plan to post something useful for transfer students every week and will likely eventually keep a running tally and fully integrated calendar of all dates and events relevant to transfer students at south! I want to help my classmates out, that is pretty much the jist. I'm looking for ways to improve it ( particularly the layout, which I'm not really feeling) so I am wide open to suggestions!

Degree Audit Tutorial For SSCC
Howdy,
When I picked a topic for my ( or, our for fellow classmates) CMST275 class I thought about how I could make my plans, which are no doubt the same plans many other people have, into a blog. I thought, is this enough information to make something out of it?
I didn't think very much about writing something substantial (200-500 words min), relevant , easy to read information that has personal significance but after I started thinking about how little I was going to have to say about it, the more I thought of to say.
The easiest way to see if you are on track in getting your degree is to use the Track my Progress: Degree Audit feature under " Student online services" on the right hand side bar on the South Seattle Community College site.
I converted my awkward picture by picture tutorial to a power point at the suggestion of my super helpful professor R. McCarthy. Thank you!
Before you start, you should have the south seattle main page open.

First post!
First off, starting this thing for my communications class. Let me explain the namesake of my site.
I used to have this under my banner, but it's a little dramatic and unpolished. So I'll leave it here for any interested parties.
I feel like my goals are bobbing around in the murky waters of the Puget sound and I am going from the hot beach to the cool, mysterious waters. It looks like my path is carpeted with drying seaweed over barnacle covered rocks. If I delay or stop my journey across the hot, crunchy seaweed I will sink into the sharp barnacles and feel the cold, wet seaweed underneath. I want to keep moving.
